چکیده

I begin by sketching two views about how it is that I manage to communicate what I do by uttering (1) in an ordinary context. The first of these two views is what I call restrictionism. According to restrictionism, the explanation of how I communicate what I do is straightforward: I utter a sentence, with assertive intent, which has a truth-valuedetermining content that is precisely what I intend to communicate. On this view, when I utter (1) in an ordinary context, my utterance is literally true, since my utterance is equivalent to something like (2). The idea is that (1) is contextsensitive: its associated domain of quantification varies with context. In this example, the context fixes the set of things which I ought to have put in the car as the domain of quantification. The exact nature of this context sensitivity is itself a
